We're fundraising for...

10 years ago we lost our fabulous friend Ash, to a rare cancer - metastatic Ewing sarcoma. The cancer started in her pelvis and spread to every vertebrae of her spine, as well as parts of her skull. We were 17 years old and in our HSC year.

Ashleigh’s treatment was cruel and long. It was heartbreaking to watch her endure 10 rounds of chemotherapy, 55 doses of radiotherapy, a hemipelvectomy operation and a stem cell transplant. Ashleigh’s cancer spread and she was then told there was nothing else they could do. Rare cancer patients like Ash have less treatment options as there is little investment, less research and limited expert knowledge in the diagnosis.

This March, in her honour and for her 30th birthday, I will be climbing Mt Kosciusko to help raise money for people diagnosed with a rare cancer like Ash’s.

It was Ash’s social worker who inspired me to pursue my career. So, starting my job at Rare Cancers Australia really felt like a full circle moment for me. I am beyond proud to be on the front line every day supporting rare cancer patients and their families. I stand side by side them, to amplify the voices of the rare community and call out inequity in healthcare.

One hundred per cent of funds raised goes towards the important work of RCA's Patient Support Team. From helping patients to access specialists and treatments, through to delivering support groups, connecting people with services and providing financial assistance particularly in times of crisis.

Ash, we miss you most in our happiest moments and when we are yapping over a bottle of wine. I wish you could see the work we are doing to make a better world for rare cancers. This is for you x
